J.D. becomes attracted to a bartender named Kylie (Chrystee Pharris), then finds out her new boyfriend has an STD. However, he can't tell her because of patient/doctor confidentiality. Meanwhile, Dr. Cox anxiously awaits the Lakers/Heat game but must tape it to watch after his shift. His patience is tested when the Janitor threatens to reveal the final score.

This episode's storyline with not telling Kylie is a bit wrong.
ReplyDeleteIt is widely recognized that the physician's duty to respect confidentiality is not without limit; for example, when an identifiable third party might somehow be harmed by the agency of the patient or if there is concern for the public health.
A physician's dilemma in these situations is one of choosing between the good of the patient and the good of others whom the physician is in a position to protect.
Agreed, as in the case of the woman who deliberately infected herself with HIV then went around sleeping with as many men as possible to deliberately infect them - to kill them. She was only caught when she went in for an unrelated checkup, the doctor diagnosed her with HIV, then later found out through the local gossip that she was knowingly sleeping around. The doctor reported her to the police and she's now serving a life sentence for attempted murder via a biological weapon.
